It is time for a knockout clash as Gujarat Titans (GT) collide with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) slated to take place at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on May 30.
Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, have had a great season. While their campaign was full of consistency, they lost their last two league matches and gave away the top-two spot, finishing third on the points table.
Gill has been the batting mainstay, scoring 649 runs with elegance and composure, but it is Sai Sudharsan who has been the quiet workhorse, topping their charts with 679 runs. Jos Buttler, who also smashed 538 runs in 14 matches, has left for international duties and will be unavailable for GT.
In the bowling department, Prasidh Krishna leads with 23 wickets. Kagiso Rabada has departed to take part in South Africa’s preparations for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final and will miss the knockout phase.
Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have had a season that can be described as chaotic. They start their campaign with four defeats in their first five games. However, in a complete turnaround, they brought their champion mentality to the fore, winning their next six matches on the bounce.
The Hardik Pandya-led side also had an opportunity to finish in the top-two but they lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final league fixture and ended up fourth in the standings.
For MI, Suryakumar Yadav has been the primary reason behind their comeback. He has scored 640 runs in 14 matches. On the bowling front, Trent Boult is their highest wicket-taker so far in the season with 19 scalps.
Mumbai will be without Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks and Corbin Bosch in the playoffs. They picked Jonny Bairstow, Charith Asalanka and Richard Gleeson as replacements.
This Eliminator will also carry a sense of personal stakes. Hardik returning to face his former side, the very team he led to a title in 2022, makes a great backstory. GT, too, have grown out of his shadow under Gill’s captaincy, and they will be eager to prove their evolution. Expect nerves, drama, and a few unlikely heroes. The IPL would not want it any other way.
GT vs MI Pitch Report: Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur
The pitch at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur has assisted the pacers early in the evening, especially under lights. Spinners also get decent help off the surface. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bundled out Punjab Kings at 101 runs in the Qualifier 1 on Thursday. Three out of five matches played at this venue in IPL 2025 have been won by the sides batting first. Dew could be a factor, which makes the toss significant.
