Summary

India lead by 96 runs on day 3 having lost the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharshan in their second innings in Headingley Test.

Rahul was unbeaten on 47 at stumps on day 3

India finished Day 3 with a lead of 96 runs after rain cut short the day's play in the final session. The day was called off almost 30 minutes earlier than scheduled time with rain playing spoilsport.

The umpires decided to call it a day as it was past 6:00 PM local time. By then, India had stretched their lead to 96 runs with KL Rahul unbeaten on 47 runs. Captain Shubman Gill was unbeaten on six runs off 10 deliveries.

With England set to chase the target set by India, it is Team India who will have to call the shots on day 4 as to how much they can score and how much time they need to bowl England out.

India Ahead By 96 Runs

The day started with England resuming on 209 runs for three wickets. They eventually added 256 more runs in their first innings. Ollie Pope was dismissed for 106 runs. Then it was Harry Brook (99 runs off 112 deliveries who added crucial runs with the lower-order. He was eventually dismissed just one short of what would have been a fabulous century. The England lower-order then went onto add crucial runs before Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up the tail and picked up his 14th fifer in Test cricket. He also became the first Asian bowler to pick up 150 wickets in SENA countries.

India's fielding and especially their slip catching was a point of discussion in the third day's play. Bumrah had four catches dropped off his bowling with Yashasvi Jaiswal missing two opportunities. He also missed an opportunity on day 2 at gully when India had a chance to dismiss Ben Duckett early. Prasidh Krishna picked up three wickets and Mohammed Siraj picked up two but conceded way too many runs. Bumrah's fifer was the highlight of India's bowling.

India started their second innings with a slender six-run lead. Jaiswal, who scored a century in the first innings, was dismissed in the fourth over of the innings. Sai Sudharsan, who bagged a duck on his debut Test innings, scored a good-looking 30 runs off 48 balls and added 66 runs together with KL Rahul. He was out to a soft dismissal as he chipped one straight to Zak Crawley at mid-wicket. Stokes dismissed Sai in the 21st over, with the day being called off in the 24th over due to persistent drizzle. Rahul was unbeaten on 47 and holds the key on day 4.

India Look For Quick Runs On Day 4

As said earlier, India will need to set the pace on day 4 as they need to set a target for England and need to have enough time on their hands to get them out. England have relished chasing since playing the Bazball brand of cricket and will look to chase potentially anything that India put up. Indian batters need to play with an aggressive intent but also need to keep their wickets intact. The lower-order did not contribute much in the first innings. However, in the second innings, they need to stand up.
