KL Rahul Is India’s Safe Bet for Leadership, Shubman Gill Needs Time to Mature, Says Sanjay Bangar

Some tosses are good to lose, as India experienced during the ongoing first Test in Leeds against England. Inserted into bat, India's opening batters, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal have got the team to a steady start. Both the openers applied themselves well and mixed caution with aggression. There were no loose shots from both the openers, as England skipper Ben Stokes missed a trick on not batting first on this batting-friendly Leeds surface.

Rahul looked very assured at the crease as he played defensive and attacking strokes with relative ease. The senior most batter in the side oozed class and so far looked very confident at the crease, before he fell for (42) runs. On the other hand, Jaiswal was a bit tentative to start with but adjusted to the pitch well in the second half of the first session.

For the hosts, Josh Tongue managed to give some trouble to the southpaw by hitting the hard lengths. New ball bowlers Chris Woakes and Carse failed to make the most of the first session.

India win the first session, as Jaiswal and Rahul dominate in Leeds

Batting was the biggest talking point heading into the five-match Test series against England for India, sans the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With only Gill, KL Rahul, Jadeja, and Rishabh Pant having previous experience in English conditions, India needed to do well. For now, the openers Jaiswal and Rahul have laid a perfect foundation. However, just when the latter was set to play a big innings, he was out for (42) runs to Carse.

The right-hand batter played a loose drive and was not fully committed to it. The session was almost flawless before the 91-run opening stand came to an end. Soon after his dismissal, debutant Sudarshan was also out for a four-ball duck.
