Summary

The former Indian batter was quick to highlight Ravindra Jadeja’s primary role as a bowler and said that he needs to be a bowler first.

Sundar and Jadeja both scores centuries

Ravindra Jadeja has been outstanding with the bat against England in the Test series so far. He has scored four fifties and a century in his last six innings of the Test series. However, his performance with the bat has largely remained unnoticed.

Jadeja almost won the game for India at Lord’s but unfortunately ran out of partners. When he had his chance again to save a Test match for India in Manchester, he dig deep. He scored just 20 runs in the first innings but made sure he scored a century and along with Washington Sundar, who also scored his maiden Test ton helped India save the Test match.

So far in the series, Ravindra Jadeja has scored 454 runs in the series and is fourth in the list of top run-getters. In fact, the top four are all Indian batters with Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant ahead of him.

His Primary Role Should't Change - Aakash Chopra On Ravindra Jadeja

In his recent YouTube video, Aakash Chopra has backed Ravindra Jadeja to be India’s number six in the ongoing WTC 2025-27 campaign.

"It's a thing worth talking about because he is doing an incredible job if he plays at No. 6 only and bats like this. However, his primary role shouldn't change because Ravichandran Ashwin isn't there now. Until Ashwin was there, you had two quality wicket-takers in the spin department," Chopra said.

However, the former Indian batter was quick to highlight Jadeja’s primary role as a bowler and said that he needs to be a bowler first. The left-arm spinner has taken just seven wickets in the series so far, playing every Test match. He has leaked runs at an average of nearly 70, which remains a concern apart from bowling too many no-balls.

"However, when you go outside India, the pitches become flat, those many wickets don't come in Jaddu's account, and (Washington) Sundar is there with him instead of Ashwin, and suddenly you realize how it would work out if both of them are playing together. Jaddu has to be the bowler first," he added.
