Vice-captain Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt on the first day of the fourth Manchester Test after he copped a blow on his right foot. The southpaw attempted a reverse sweep of pacer Chris Woakes and missed the shot, with the ball crashing on his toe. The wicketkeeper-batter was batting on 37 off 48 balls when he left the field grimacing in pain.

Pant was spotted leaving the ground in a golf cart labelled as an ambulance. It is still not clear whether he will come out to bat.

"Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress,” the BCCI said after the end of the day's play.

Rishabh Pant in focus as India aim to solidify position on Day two

All eyes will be on Rishabh Pant and the scan reports. The BCCI medical team is continuously monitoring his progress. The southpaw was batting well and was looking set to bat deep. Apart from that, India's batters showed resilience and grit on a not-so-batting-friendly pitch. Sai Sudarshan stood out with a gritty knock of 61. Jaiswal also scored 58 before off-spinner Liam Dawson dismissed him.

The visitors finished the day on a solid 264 runs and lost just four wickets. On the second day, the visitors will aim to build on a solid start and try to reach 500 by the end of the day.
