Lucknow Super Giants ended their season in the 7th spot in the points table with 12 points. Their IPL 2025 season was a mixed bag, with lots of questions asked about their team dynamics and strategy.
As the season came to a close for the Lucknow-based franchise, an interesting development surfaced. LSG’s head coach, Justin Langer, had reportedly wanted to sign Prithvi Shaw during the mega auction to secure a reliable Indian opener and strengthen the top order. However, the move didn’t materialize, as the team instead chose to retain Ayush Badoni for ₹4 crore as part of their Indian core.

Prithvi Shaw Snub Raises Questions
It was a season full of “what ifs” for LSG. Prithvi Shaw could have been a strong option, especially since the team had to rely on Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh to open the batting. With an overseas-heavy top order featuring Marsh, Markram, and Nicholas Pooran, LSG expected their Indian contingent, Rishabh Pant, Ayush Badoni, and Abdul Samad to provide balance. But that plan fell short.

According to reports, the push for Shaw came from Langer himself. Despite concerns around Shaw’s fitness and discipline, Langer believed in his potential. He had envisioned Shaw opening alongside an overseas partner, with Marsh dropping to the middle order to provide stability. Fans were also disappointed that Shaw, who went unsold for ₹30 lakh, wasn’t picked up. Many felt that spending ₹4 crore to retain Badoni instead was a questionable decision.
“Shaw ultimately went unsold at the auction, sparking considerable resentment among fans and insiders who believed he could have been a steal at ₹30 lakh. Instead, the franchise opted to spend ₹4 crore on Ayush Badoni a move that has raised quite a few eyebrows in cricketing circles,” a source said.
LSG Set for Coaching Shake-Up as Langer Nears Exit
Moreover, LSG is reportedly set to part ways with Justin Langer as head coach. Team owner Sanjiv Goenka had once stated that a coach is only considered successful if he delivers a title. With Langer now likely to exit, mentor Zaheer Khan who has already taken on multiple responsibilities within the franchise is expected to be promoted to head coach. Rishabh Pant is expected to continue as captain next season, and he, alongside Zaheer Khan, will look to lead LSG into a new chapter.
