Riyan Parag DC vs RR

Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder Riyan Parag was at the forefront of a rare interruption during the team's match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 16 at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in Delhi. The RR player was forced to change his bat just before he was set to face his first ball.

Coming into the bat after RR skipper Sanju Samson was retired hurt in the power play, Parag was stopped by the umpire for a routine bat gauge check. The bat failed to meet the required guidelines, leading to an animated exchange between the RR batter and the umpire. Despite arguing for some time, Parag had no option but to change his bat before resuming play.

The video has gone viral on social media, showing the precise moment when the bat was tested and the RR batter's displeasure upon the umpire's refusal to give it a green signal.

As luck would have it, the new bat did not yield favorable results for Parag as he was dismissed for just 8 runs from 11 balls.

Riyan Parag not the first batter in the IPL 2025 season to fail bat gauge test

For the unversed, Parag is not the first batter to fail the bat gauge test in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. Earlier, KKR's players Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje were also made to change their respective bats after similar checks by match officials. According to IPL 2025 rules and regulations, bats must adhere to strict dimensions: A maximum width of 10.79 cm, blade thickness of up to 6.7 cm, edge thickness not exceeding 4 cm, and total length capped at 96.4 cm.

With timely checkups by umpires, players and franchises are constantly reminded that negligence with equipment standards is non-negotiable this IPL 2025 season.

Why are umpires checking bats?

It is to be noted that the umpires are checking the bats as part of BCCI protocols, which aim to prevent players from gaining undue advantages in an already batting-heavy, dominated T20 format. The BCCI has told umpires to check any bats they consider necessary during live games.
