Rishabh Pant Family Background and Early Life

Birth, Hometown & Community,

Rishabh Pant was born on 4 October 1997 in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, where he was raised but also travelled to Delhi with his mother during the weekends for cricket training from an early age. Pant belongs to a Hindu family and his family is a part of the Kumaoni Brahmin caste.

Parents & Siblings

Pant’s father, Rajendra Pant, was a former wicket-keeper batsman at the university level and was a businessman who ran a school in Roorkee. His mother, Saroj Pant, was a housewife and later on became a school operator. She took her son to train under Tarak Sinha at the Sonnet Cricket Academy every weekend in Delhi where they had to stay at a Gurudwara in Moti Bagh. His elder sister, Sakshi Pant, currently resides in London having pursued her higher education from the same place. Pant’s father died in April 2017 due to a cardiac arrest.

Rishabh Pant Education & Cricketing Beginnings

Pant studied in The Indian Public School in Dehradun. He finished his higher secondary education from Sri Venkateswara International School, Delhi. He enrolled in Delhi University for the BA course but chose to focus on cricket instead. Pant was a part of the Sonnet Cricket Academy under Tarak Sinha who helped him hone his skills during his formative years.

Initially, Sinha had suggested Pant to switch to Rajasthan to play U-13 and U-15 cricket but that didn’t work out and he was told to change his entire batting technique to shape himself to be better. He had his breakthrough during an U-19 match against Assam where he scored 35 runs in his first innings and 150 in his second. At the 2016 U-19 Cricket World Cup, he stunned everyone with a 18-ball half-century against Nepal which was the fastest in the tournament. This put him in the eyes of selectors.

Rishabh Pant Domestic & IPL Career

Ranji Trophy & First-Class Debut

 Pant made his first-class debut in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy on 22 October 2015 against Bengal in the Eden Gardens. He scored 75 runs in two innings and was impressive. His List A debut came in the 2015-16 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 23 December 2015 against Jharkhand. In the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season, he smashed 308 runs in an innings which made him the third youngest Indian ever to hit a triple century in first-class cricket.

In November 2016, in a match against Jharkhand, he scored the fastest century in the Ranji Trophy off just 48 balls. He also scored the second fastest century ever in a T20 match at the time against Himachal Pradesh in the 2017-18 Zonal T20 League.

IPL Journey & Club Number

Pant’s IPL journey began when he was acquired by Delhi Daredevils before the 2016 IPL auction for Rs 1.9 crore. His highlight of the season came when he scored 69 off 40 against Gujarat Lions and in 2017, he scored 97 runs off 43 balls against the same team. Pant’s batting abilities were further lauded when he scored 128 runs not out off just 63 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 IPL season, which was the highest individual score by an Indian in IPL at the time.

He was promoted to captain for the re-branded Delhi Capitals in 2021 and continued for the 2022 season as well. He missed out on the 2023 season after his almost fatal car accident but returned as their captain in 2024. In IPL 2025, Pant was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for a whopping Rs 27 crore which made him the most expensive player in IPL history. He went on to replace KL Rahul who was not retained by LSG. He scored a century against RCB in the same season as well as the captain of the team. He wears the #17 jersey for the team.

Rishabh Pant International Career Highlights

Pant made his T20I debut on 1 February 2017 against England at Bengaluru which made him the then youngest Indian player ever in a T20I match at 19 years of age. He made his Test debut against the same opposition at Nottingham on 18 August 2018. He scored his maiden century just a month later on 11 September 2018 against England.

This meant that he was the second-youngest wicket-keeper and the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a Test century in England. He also became the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a Test century in Australia. His ODI debut came against West Indies in Assam on 21 October 2018. In January 2021, he became the fastest Indian wicket-keeper to reach 1,000 runs in Test cricket.

Rishabh Pant Car Accident, Recovery & Health

On December 30, 2022, Pant was driving his Mercedes-Benz SUV on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. Near his hometown of Roorkee, Pant might have reportedly fallen asleep at the wheel which caused the car to skid and hit a road divider that caused it to catch fire. He was rushed to the Saksham Hospital in Roorkee and transferred later to Max Hospital in Dehradun.

He was then airlifted to Mumbai. The crash was near-fatal and it caused injuries to his head, abrasion injuries to his back, ankle, toe, and caused a ligament tear in his right knee. He also suffered from ACL, PCL and collateral ligament injuries and tears. He also suffered cuts to his forehead and face and was instructed to undergo plastic surgery for his facial lacerations and abrasions.

He had to undergo surgery to reconstruct all of the three ligaments in his knee. His MRI scans showed that he didn’t sustain any major damages to his brain or spine. After the surgery, he had to spend more than 45 days completely bedridden. Physiotherapy got him lightly jogging by mid of 2023 and he also had a good recovery well before the expected timeline.

He missed the entire 2023 season due to the almost-deadly accident. He made his return on 23 March 2024 for Delhi Capitals in the IPL and also participated in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which India won. He is currently fully fit with no lasting physical or mental adversities persistent from the accident.

Pant suffered from a few back and hamstring injuries during 2019-2021 which also caused his form to dip and led to him missing out on a few matches. In an ODI match against Australia in 2020, a bouncer from Pat Cummins hit Pant on the head which caused a concussion and he was replaced. He also missed the second ODI.

In October 2024, in a Test match against New Zealand, Pant was hit with the ball on his right knee, the same knee which underwent operation after his near-fatal car accident, and there were speculations on whether it will have any lasting consequences. Fortunately for him, it did not.

His current training regimen includes strength training, speed and agility training, wicket keeping drills, flexibility and recovery with focus on proper nutrition and hydration.
