India's Test skipper Shubman Gill has expressed immense joy after winning the ICC Player of the Month Award for July. The award held extra significance as it came during his debut series against England, when he was leading the team. Not only did the 25-year-old prove his mettle with his calm leadership, he was terrific with the bat in hand also, as he ended up scoring a colossal 754 runs - the most by an Indian leader in a bilateral series.

Gill started the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with a bang by scoring a 100 in the first Leeds Test. He carried that form in the second Test in Birmingham, where he ended up scoring 269 - his highest individual Test score. Gill also capped off that Test with another hundred. Naturally, when quizzed about the epic series, the skipper picked the double ton as one of its most special innings during the series.

"It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I will cherish forever and will  be one of the highlights of my tour to England."

Shubman Gill's record-breaking effort earns him praise from Sunil Gavaskar

Before the England series, Shubman Gill had said that he wants to lead from the front with bat in hand. The 25-year-old walked those talks with sheer dominance as if he were not leading for the first time. It is this phenomenal performance that earned him a huge compliment from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. The expert said that his 774 runs were nothing when compared to what Gill has achieved, as it came when he was leading the side for the first time.

While the right-hand batter fell short by just 20 runs of Gavaskar's all-time Indian record of 774, the legend congratulated him by giving him a signed cap & a jersey. Currently, Gill is enjoying some much-needed rest before he will again resume captaincy duties for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025 season for North Zone. The domestic 2025/26 season will kick off on August 28 with North Zone taking on East Zone in Bengaluru.
